Kaelo launches new brand

It is with great excitement and anticipation that Kaelo unveils our new identity, which extends well beyond a visual re-branding, to reflect the physical growth and continuous evolution of our business. The time has come to align Kaelo’s corporate image with who and what we have become - a guardian of health and a leader in the journey toward both wellness and lifesaving lifestyle changes.

Kaelo celebrates 1st anniversary with Pink Wellness

This July 2008, we celebrate the one-year anniversary of Kaelo’s coming together with Pink Wellness. This was a perfectly seamless transition which has flourished into an extremely successful and dynamic relationship. Together, we have assembled an amazing team of passionate and dedicated professionals and we’ve grown by more than 200%! We have been delighted and inspired by the market’s response to our combined services and we look forward to continued success for many years to come.

Kaelo's own 'Striding Man'

The Johnnie Walker Striding Man competition is a celebration of inspirational and entrepreneurial success in the Johnnie Walker style. We are proud of Kaelo's own Co-Founder and Executive Director, Thabang Skwambane, who was selected from a number of entrants as one of the ten "striding men" finalists, in recognition of his achievements.

Kaelo hosts Theo Jackson Golf Day

In April, Kaelo co-sponsored the Theo Jackson Golf Day, a fundraising event established to raise money for a scholarship fund that provides bursaries to under-privileged boys to attend high school at Johannesburg's Jeppe High School for Boys. Held at at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Course, the event was true to Kaelo style – fun, energetic and a great success!

Kaelo rallies support for xenophobia refugees

As a company whose philosophy is rooted in contributing to the greater good, Kaelo and its staff felt compelled to respond to the recent and tragic xenophobic events. Upon mobilizing an outstanding team of compassionate volunteers, Kaelo visited several affected sites to provide much needed medical care and psychological support to the refugees, and delivered several truckloads of supplies to help meet the needs of the displaced and the organizations offering them safety and refuge. The outpouring of support through financial contributions and donations of food, water, clothing, blankets, toiletries and baby supplies – which we continue to receive – has demonstrated the generosity of South Africans and their desire to stand up against these violent attacks. Our sincerest thanks goes to every single individual who contributed to our efforts – we were proud to work with you in reaching out to our brothers and sisters.

In The News: HIV a factor behind obesity?

(Taken from PlusNews)

CAPE TOWN, 4 June 2008 - While public health experts in South Africa spent much of the last decade focusing on controlling infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and eradicating malnutrition, the growth of another public health crisis has gone almost unnoticed. High obesity levels, which have given rise to a virtual epidemic of non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension, are finally grabbing attention. Being overweight brings with it serious health risks: obesity usually comes first, followed by hypertension as the heart has to work much harder to pump blood to all parts of the body. Health officials have warned that when accompanied by an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise and smoking, it can also result in heart disease and diabetes.

July is Mental Illness Awareness Month

Health is not simply the absence of disease, but rather considers a more holistic view which includes mental health and well-being. Again, good mental health is not just the absence of clearly defined mental illnesses such as depression or anxiety, but involves a general sense of well-being, motivation and excitement about life. As South Africans, we still tend to hide our emotional and psychological challenges and view them as weaknesses, however they present us with opportunities to develop a stronger sense of self, learn how to manage stress and difficulties, and make empowered choices.

Good mental health is within reach of all of us. The challenge to you is to prioritize your mental health in the same way you do your physical health. Avoid using crutches like drugs and alcohol to help you cope. Tell somebody how you really feel. Allow yourself the pleasure of seeking help from a social worker, counselor, psychologist or life coach. Do something each day that makes you truly happy. Learn how to manage your stress effectively. Meditate, exercise, dream. Do any one thing today that enhances your emotional and psychological well-being and commit to doing it each day after today.

The Lonely Road Update

A Kaelo-sponsored NGO

The Lonely Road Foundation (TLRF), is a Sub-Saharan African development charity, aiming to bring life, hope and opportunity to orphans and vulnerable children living in rural and underprivileged communities across South Africa.

Since the completion of The Lonely Road Challenge, the inaugural fundraising and consciousness-raising initiative of TLRF, the promotion and success of the organization and its efforts continues.

The funds raised to date are going a long way to supporting the first identified needy community, The Dikgale Clan in Limpopo. In partnership with The Heartbeat Foundation, TLRF has built 11 Drop-in Centres in Dikgale, trained 132 caregivers to provide care and support to OVC, and feeds 1,384 needy children one meal a day - a great start!

A Healthy Thought

“It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Within each of us lies the power of our consent to health and sickness, to riches and poverty, to freedom and to slavery. It is we who control these, and not another.” - Richard Bach (Illusions)

Trivia

Answer: Cervical cancer. This is one type of cancer which is curable when detected early, and countries which have active screening programs realize a dramatic decrease in mortality from this disease.
