Financial Impact Studies
A Financial Impact Study assesses current prevalence and projected future prevalence and estimates resulting illnesses, absences, deaths, etc. It then measures the associated financial impacts resulting from productivity losses, turnover, deaths, etc.
Knowledge, Attitudes & Practices Survey (KAP Survey)
Kaelo conducts a KAP survey among all employees to assess their knowledge of HIV/AIDS, attitudes toward HIV positive colleagues, understanding of company policies, etc. Available online or as a paper based survey, this tool helps identify issues unique to the company, region and/or industry, and helps us create custom designed, targeted information, education & communication (IEC) initiatives that will meet specific, identified needs.
Policy Development
In cooperation with the client, Kaelo reviews and updates, or develops as necessary, the company’s Workplace Policy to ensure that it adequately reflects the company’s position on, and practices around health and wellness, for employees infected or affected by any illness or chronic disease.
Programme Coordination
Kaelo designates a Client Relationship Manager (CRM) to coordinate initiatives for each client and manage all aspects of the programme to ensure its successful implementation. Kaelo encourages clients to establish an HIV/AIDS committee to liaise with the CRM and provide internal assistance with coordination. Programmes follow the Global Reporting Initiative framework, to ensure routine and comparable social performance and sustainability reporting.
Education & Training - HIV/AIDS Workshops
Workshops that increase education and awareness are a vital tool for addressing discrimination and uninformed responses to HIV/AIDS in the workplace. The objectives of Kaelo’s education and awareness workshops are to increase understanding of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, promote prevention of HIV, provide information and resources to infected or affected employees, reduce stigma and discrimination in the workplace and, most importantly, to encourage individuals to test, know their status and be empowered to either manage the disease or remain HIV negative. [This training is recognised by Sector Education and Training authorities and thus these costs can be partially or entirely recovered from skills levy contributions.
Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT)
As part of Kaelo’s “Know Your Status” initiatives, employees are encouraged to undergo a confidential voluntary HIV test with a healthcare professional, which includes pre-test and post-test counselling. Kaelo’s VCT initiative provides employees with multiple opportunities to test, which is designed to achieve as close to 100% uptake over time as possible. Additionally, this approach permits a measure of incidence (new infections), against which education and awareness initiatives can be evaluated.
Case Management
Any employee who demonstrates concerning warning signs for illness or disease, or who is diagnosed with a chronic disease or HIV/AIDS, is enrolled in Kaelo’s patient management initiative. This includes proactive follow-up from nurses, social workers and trained counsellors through Kaelo’s call centre, medical advice and psychosocial care and support, appropriate referrals for treatment, and ongoing counselling and support to ensure compliance to any treatment regimes and to monitor health and contra indications. Once enrolled in case management, employees receive support from Kaelo for life.
