Celebrating Diversity and Identity

Africa is a mixed pot of diverse cultures and, with it being September, we celebrate our heritage and the diversity of our continent.

In his first month in office, former president Nelson Mandela proclaimed:

Each of us is as intimately attached to the soil of this beautiful country as are the famous Jacaranda trees in Pretoria and the Mimosa trees of the Bushveld – a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world.

Not only do we need to expand the definition of diversity beyond just the visible differences such as our race, gender and age, our task is to include the invisible differences that make everyone uniquely different but we also need to evolve perspectives beyond categorising people into boxes.

Embracing diversity, cultivating a sense of belonging to humanity regardless of other people’s religion, culture, ethnicity, gender, sexual preferences or class, helps to develop emotional intelligence and in the process strengthens our openness to innovation and creativity and any other number of virtues, all of which can facilitate personal relationships and professional success.
