A Life-Changing Decision

Back in 2003, I was at a crossroads. I was unemployed and unsure of what the future held for me. I received a letter from Kaelo, inviting me to an interview. I still remember it clearly, to meet Justin Savage for a job opportunity. Little did I know, that the decision I would make would shape the next 20 years of my life.

When I arrived at Kaelo, I was greeted by Justin, the co-founder of Kaelo. I called him “my brother,” and he laughed, visibly touched by the warmth in the word. “For you to call me your brother makes me happy,” he said, smiling. “It shows the love you have for people.” In that moment, I felt seen, understood, and welcomed, as though I had found the right place to be.

We agreed that I would help for six weeks, doing things like making tea, cleaning,  and running errands. Justin took the time to show me what my tasks would be, and from day one, I felt I was part of something bigger, something that genuinely cared for people.

The Early Days

In 2004, Kaelo was still small, with just five of us in an office in Rosebank. Within three months, we had to relocate due to growth, but the sense of family never changed. I took on more responsibilities such as filing, assisting with client visits, and creating posters. The company quickly grew, transforming from Kaelo Health and Wellness into the thriving organisation it is today.

A Family Beyond Work

Some of my fondest memories with Kaelo come from moments of joy and laughter. I’ll never forget the weekend we spent in Vaal, full of pranks, laughter, and warmth. It truly felt like being part of a big, beautiful family. My employers even took an interest in my personal life, wanting to know about my son, and they went out of their way to make me feel supported, taking us to the zoo, and sharing in the joy of our lives.

Gratitude for the Journey

I will never forget the day when I had nothing. I was struggling, unsure of how I would make it through. When I got the job, it felt like a miracle. I didn’t even have proper clothes for work, but the receptionist took me shopping, helping me pick out a few outfits. I was in awe of their kindness and in awe of what God had done for me. Kaelo didn’t just give me a job, they gave me hope and dignity.

The years have flown by, what started as six weeks turned into six months, and then into 20 years. Kaelo has been more than a workplace for me; it has been a life-saver. I didn’t see the years pass, but every moment has been filled with purpose, love, and growth.

As I look back on the journey, I am filled with gratitude, and I would gladly walk another 20 years with this incredible family. Kaelo has truly lived by its guiding principles of putting people first and engaging with sincere care. I am forever thankful for the chance to be part of something meaningful.
