Spring into wellness

In South Africa, 1 September marks the beginning of Spring! However, according to Britannica, the spring season officially starts on 22 September. This period is also known as the vernal equinox, a moment in the year when “the sun is exactly above the equator and day and night are of equal length”.
Whether Spring officially arrives on the 1st or 22nd of September, spring is the time when nature and vegetation resurface once again. Geographers, environmentalists and poets have all considered this season a time for rebirth.
According to Psychology Today, these seasonal changes can be useful from a mindfulness perspective. Signs of change in nature are everywhere and we can challenge ourselves to be more observant. Springtime, in particular, is a wonderful time to become more aware of the growth and life surrounding us.
Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.
Mindfulness helps us put some space between ourselves and our reactions, breaking down our conditioned responses.

Here’s how to tune into mindfulness throughout the day:

  1. Set aside time and space to allow yourself to become aware.
  2. Observe the present moment as it is. Pay attention to the present moment without judgement.
  3. Be kind to your wandering mind.
