Be a Force for Change this
World AIDS Day
Every year on December 1, the whole world comes together to mark World AIDS Day.
According to the World Health Organisation, an estimated 25.7 million people in Africa are living with HIV. While 64% of them now have access to lifesaving antiretroviral therapy. Over the years there has been substantial progress when it comes to HIV awareness and treatment options.
New research, including the PURPOSE series of investigational clinical trials taking place in Uganda and South Africa, holds promise for the future of medications to both treat and prevent HIV.
Among the medications being tested are injections and tablets that can potentially be used to prevent HIV infection. However, public availability of these medications is still many years away.
Alongside the advancements of treatment therapy there is still much to be done to fight the stigma that lingers around HIV/AIDS.
The upholding of everyone’s human rights is an essential underpinning of an effective HIV response. This World AIDS Day, be the force of change and take action to protect everyone’s health by protecting everyone’s rights.
As the saying goes: “Knowledge is contagious- Spread it, not stigma!”
